I was saved at 8 years of age, called to preach at 19, attended Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO, in the fall of 1966. Met Pat Goodson, my wife to be, in 1967. We were married in 1969. We have three children: Shannon, Misty, and Ben. We have two grandchildren: Dakota and Shaye. We have been at Ocean View, formerly Midway Baptist Church, since December of 1973. We love OVC with all our heart!
What is something people don't know about you? Not many know my legal name is Jimmie Wayne Baize.
Why do you love OVC? It has been the joy of our lives to invest in the families of Ocean View for over three and one half decades. We have seen Ocean View Church grow from just a handful of people to over 1000 and stay over that mark for over 30 years. Almost every great memory we have took place at OVC.
Favorite Verse: Psalm 37:3-5 Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.

My wife, Christa, and I arrived with our two sons, Nathan (14) and Ryan (12), in South Bay San Diego in September of 2007 by way of Springfield, Missouri. I truly have a heart for every age group and enjoy leading others to discover the true riches found in God's Word. I primarily oversee operations, developing, aligning, and implementing our ministry strategies.
Before taking a vocational position with a church, I worked professionally in the multi-media industry as a producer/director for 10 years. In 1999 I was named to the nations "Top 100" list by Sony Industries and have put this valuable experience to use in numerous global missions and church projects.
What is something people don't know about you? When I was eight I would take my Daisy BB gun into the pasture and light up the hind ends of my fathers cattle...unfortunately in the end it was my backside that felt to be on fire!
Why do you love OVC? I love seeing the power of God working in an through His people! The Spirit of God is active and contagious in our church and it is evidenced with hundreds receiving Christ, being baptized, and growing in their faith each year!

I grew up in the small town of Twain Harte, California, where I fell in love with music at an early age. After high school I went to Azusa Pacific University in southern California where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Music Theory and Composition in 2001. It was during college that I met AND married the love of my life, Christy. We were married in 1999 and (fast-forward ten years) we now have two strapping young boys, Nathaniel (8) and Noah (5). In 2002 we fell in love with the people of Ocean View Church and felt God calling us to ministry at this place. After almost four years of ministry at OVC, the Lord moved us back to the Los Angeles area where I started a graduate program in commercial music at Cal State LA. After being gone from Ocean View for a year, the Lord saw fit to bring my family and I back in a new way. Due to a number of compelling circumstances, we could not relocate back to San Diego; however, we now commute on the weekends from Burbank to San Diego in order to minister with the people we love and are privileged call our family. During the week I compose and orchestrate for film and TV, and on the weekends we worship and fellowship at OVC. Being the Music and Worship Pastor at Ocean View is the most wonderful blessing I could ever imagine, and we feel honored to call Ocean View our church home.
What is something people don't know about you? One of my guilty pleasures is going to the movies with my wife. We never rent movies because we see whatever we want to see in the theater when it comes out. It's our favorite date night, and we go at least once a week, even though it's terribly expensive. There's just nothing like seeing a movie on the silver screen. NOTHING.
Why do you love OVC? I love it because it is a very authentic and REAL place. I've never encountered a church body that contains a more genuine and diverse group of people. OVC is not your typical church. It is beyond special...it is truly unique. Albeit far from perfect (as if any church could be called that), it finds its identity in a diversity and friendliness that I believe honors God. You'll find all types of people at Ocean View, and I love it.
Favorite Verse: Mark 25:14-30 The Parable of the Talents

I grew up in southeast Arkansas. I attended a small country Baptist Church where I was saved as a teenager. After high school and two years of college, I moved to San Diego where I worked in the aerospace business. I worked my way up to a management position. I met the love of my life, Arlyne, and now have three Children: Mark, Sandra, and Susan. After seven years in San Diego, we moved to Los Angeles where I continued work in the aerospace business. A few years later, as part of a career change, I became a painting contractor and Arlyne and I attended UCLA's School of Interior Design. We began Travis and Son Painting and LaMar Interiors and worked together for many successful years. Upon retirement, we moved back to San Diego and became active in our community, as needed. I also became a board member of the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce, a chairperson of Business to Business in Imperial Beach, and a member of the Port of San Diego's financial advisory committee, as well as other activities.
Why do you love OVC? During a transition period, we bought a vacation beach home in Imperial Beach which we used a number of years before retiring and moving back to San Diego. In looking for a church home away from home, we visited Ocean View Church. We found that OVC was friendly and warm and that it preached the Word of God. After meeting Pastor Baize and other church leaders, we knew we had found our new church away from home. Now OVC has become our permanent church where it is now my great honor to serve my God and Ocean View as a Trustee.

I was born in Plainville Kansas on August 1, 1967. NOT Smallville, but Plainville. My father was in the Navy and so in my young life, I lived in the Philippines and Japan before I turned six. My mother, sister and I moved back to the states in 1973 where we lived in Nebraska for one year. I moved around Kansas quite a bit after that until graduating from Liberal High School and joining the Navy in 1986. I spent four years active duty in the Submarine Force and then went into the Naval Reserves, which I have been serving since 1990. Most recently I spent the past 3 1/2 years on active duty with one seven month deployment to Iraq with SEAL Team THREE. I am currently employed by the Department of the Navy as a Operations Manager for SEAL Team FIVE. I serve at the church as a Trustee, choir member, Levite minister and AWANA leader as well as Assistant coach for the high school football team and part time referee for the junior high basketball league.
What is something people don't know about you? I was born with the last name of Jones
Why do you love OVC? I love OVC because when I first arrived to San Diego and started attending, it reminded me of my church back home in Liberal, Kansas. At the time, the interior colors were similar and the Bible preaching was similar. I love it because it is a family who welcomes in everyone and allows you, as well as encourages you, to get involved and be a part of the family of God. Most importantly, it is where I met and married my beautiful bride Ivy. If it were not for Ocean View Church, I would not be the person I am today, with a family and friends that I love with all my heart.

I was born in San Fernando, California. I'm the oldest of six children, (four sisters and one brother). Both of my parents were Christians. Three of my sisters went to Bible college, but I couldn't hardly wait until I was old enough to join the US Navy. I spent the next twenty-seven years exploring the world. I met and married Norma, my English sweetheart, and are still together after 44 years. During the last six years (since becoming OVC members) I have assisted the women of Roses Shoppe in their missions ministry. I've also served as the OVC food pantry director, cook and server for Mighty Men's Prayer Breakfast meetings, and I currently serve on the OVC Trustee and School Board. I am a van driver for Senior members, and I visit Senior's homes during hospice conditions.
What is something people don't know about you? When I married my wife, Norma, I told her I'd marry her for only 50 years. We are now at 44... I wonder if she'll still have me after 50?!
Why do you love OVC? In 2003, Norma and I planned on a visit to England. Just before we went to England, our son Darren invited us to attend his church (OVC). We went on a Wednesday evening and sat up in the balcony. Pastor Baize made me feel really good and relaxed, but something pulling me. God was talking to my heart. Later that evening I told Darren we would start attending Ocean View as soon as we returned from our trip. I had a feeling I was going to love this church. On the third day in England, my daughter called us in the middle of the night crying that Darren had passed away. We came straight home. Our house seemed empty, but Ocean View Church was warm, alive, and God was present. We love our church!

I have been attending Ocean View since 1975 and Mylora has been attending since 1993. I graduated from Midway Baptist Schools (MBS) in 1988. We were married in the church in 1995. Both of us have served in several ministries including Sunday School, nursery, MOPS, home fellowships/small groups and AWANA. We started serving to see how we could help out but serving has been a blessing to us. We have two kids, Sammy, 9, and Grace, 7. Both kids attend MBS.
It is a blessing to see how this church has changed in the past 34 years. We are happy to be serving here and are excited about what the Lord has planned for OVC.

As a kid I grew up just down the street from Ocean View Church. I remember hanging out in my front yard as Shannon and Ben walked to Midway Baptist Schools wearing their A.C.E. uniforms and laughing at them. In 1984, my parents decided that I would look good in an A.C.E. uniform and sent me to MBS. I was a student from 1984 through 1988. During that time, I discovered a personal relationship with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I later went on to graduate from San Diego State University with a major in Industrial Psychology and a minor in Business Administration. I married my sweetheart and best friend, Shelley, in 1991 and the Lord has blessed us with two amazing children Jordan and Gardner. After several years away from the church, my good friend Gilbert Sepulveda invited me one Sunday and I have been faithful ever since. I love the Ocean View family and my brothers and sisters in Christ. God has allowed me to serve on the trustee board for several years, work in the AWANA program and serve in Extra Connection. I believe that each and every one of us are called to be missionaries for Christ. You don't have to go around the world to share the wonderful Gospel of Christ, you can go to your work, your school, across the street, next door, even in your own home.

I grew up a Navy brat: born in the Phillippines and spent some of my childhood in Hawaii. San Diego has been my home since 1984, and I find it difficult to stay away. My first real encounter with Jesus happened when I was a freshman in high school. Because of this, Jesus has given me a heart for Youth ministry. I also enjoy singing (pretty sure I entered the world microphone in hand, belting out a tune) and have been involved in some capacity of Music ministry since I was saved. I ecstatically married a great friend of mine in 2002, becoming Mrs. Michael Gerzen. Shortly thereafter, our very own sources of endless free entertainment came into our lives in the form of two lil' squeezers: Maeghan & Vivian. When Maeghan began preschool in 2006, I began attending Celebrate Recovery at Ocean View Church as a support to help deal with some of my hurts, habits, & hang ups. Ocean View Church has since become our home away from home.

What is something people don't know about you? I really enjoy "chick flick/romantic comedies", but in my defense I grew up around 5 women, don't judge me.
Why do you love OVC? I love OVC because it feels like home every time I walk through the front door. As a church planter's kid, I grew up around all kinds of churches, but MBC was the first church to feel like home.
Favorite Verse: Romans 12:1-2 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

Way back in the day, around 1967 when I was just a toddler, my family moved to Imperial Beach...so I claim to be a native San Diegan. I first came to Ocean View as a college student in 1983 and God immediately used the preaching of Pastor Baize to impress upon me the need for a personal relationship with Christ. After making the most important decision of my life, the Holy Spirit began to both convict and direct. As a result I transferred to a Bible college to learn and prepare for whatever God had in store for me. At college the Lord brought into my life a beautiful young lady named Barbara, which led to the second most important decision of my life. Barbara and I were married in 1987 and we have four wonderful children...Stephanie, Jared, Jesse, and Sabrina. We have been serving on staff at Midway since 1991.
What is something people don't know about you? Most people don't believe me when I tell them that I was born in the Philippines.
Why do you love OVC? What impressed me most back in 1983 and still does today is the consistent preaching and leadership from the Pastor as well as the friendliness of the congregation.
Favorite Verse: Proverbs 3:5-7. These verses remind me to trust, acknowledge, fear and depart.

Favorite Superhero: I guess I would go with Superman. He always saves the day and is so nice and polite while doing it. I think that he is probably a Christian.
Favorite Sports Team: I am a lifelong Charger and Padre fan, but if forced to pick, I would have to say that there is more Charger powder blue in my veins than Padre blue.

In early 2008 my life's plan was working out well on paper: a beautiful family, a new promotion in my career in government service, and authorization to relocate to my hometown where I would have family close by. However, in reality I was struggling with every decision, and no path was the clear, right choice. I looked back over the last few years, and the decisions that I had made with good intentions, had not lead me to feelings of comfort and peace, but instead uncertainty and loss. This led me on a journey over the next few months of seeking and heeding to the will of God. Not trying to fit God into my plan for my life, but seeking His desires by prayer and fasting and acting when opportunities arose that answered prayer. Since coming to Ocean View my family has been blessed by God in many ways. It is exciting and humbling to experience the hand of God at work, and to be used by Him. My prayer is that God continues to use my family and I at OVC & Ocean View Christian Academy for a long time.
What is something people don't know about you? When I was young I competed as a speed skater on rollerskates; however, I now fall easily in rollerblades and don't even try.
Why do you love OVC? The people are real and open, and come from all walks of life. However when we join together in worship and praise, there is no place you would rather be...on earth that is.
